BACKGROUND AND TRAINING
From a background of work with children
and families I trained with a number of psychotherapy centres, and worked as
a psychotherapist and senior tutor until 2012. I now work as a writer and
researcher, but as with my psychotherapy work I am concerned to develop my
sensitivity to the experiences of all individuals, bearing in mind
differences of class, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender and sexual
orientation.

TUTORIAL SUPPORT
I offer tutorial guidance and
support to students in liaison with their training organisation, and to
professionals experiencing difficulty in study, writing and research.
Identifying individual learning styles and needs and developing appropriate
skills can render this crucial area less daunting and more rewarding.

PUBLICATIONS
I have published
articles on a range of subjects from depression to the relations between
therapeutic approaches. The most recent, ‘“Play” in psychotherapy and
education’, was co-written with David Smart and appeared in the European
Journal of Psychotherapy and Counselling (2008). My first book, An
Introduction to Object Relations (Free Association Books, 1997), is on the
reading lists of psychotherapy and counselling courses of all approaches; and
my second book, The Freud Wars (Routledge, 2005) came out of a deeper
exploration of psychotherapy as a discipline. I am currently working on a
third book, Developments in Object Relations (to be published by
Routledge).
